Prayer Before Worship: We incline our ears to the words of your mouth and will tell of your glorious deeds, O Lord.  Your righteousness is like streams of goodness washing our soul.  You purify the thoughts of our minds by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, and sanctify our actions by the gift of your Son Jesus Christ.  We appear now before you as children renewed by your mercy, to give you all praise in response to your grace.  Amen.

    Third Sunday of Lent

Sermon Title: Dangerous Prayers, Free Me

    Scripture: John 8: 31-36

"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to me teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

"They answered him, 'We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone.  How can you say that we shall be set free?'

"Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place int the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son set you free, you will be free indeed."

Prayer Before Worship: Surprising God, whose love leads us to new experiences, help us to be open to your appearance among us and within.  Let us sense your glory in the sights and sounds of this day.  Confront us with your law and the prophets' word, that our lives may more fully reflect your purposes.  May your Spirit move us to speak of the light that you reveal. Amen.

    Second Sunday of Lent
    Theme: Dangerous Prayers
    Title: Stretch Me
    Scripture: Ephesians 3:14-21; Mathew 12:9-13

"Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.  Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, (the Pharisees) asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"

"(Jesus) said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and left it out?  How much more valuable is a man than a sheep!  Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

"Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."  So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other."

    Prayer Before Worship

Reigning God, whose appearances among us came in many forms, grant that we may be alert and responsive to your presence.  When our limited expectations cut us off from you, open our senses to new experiences, not just for ourselves but that the world may believe.  May that relationship of trust open up vistas of services that link all humankind in caring community.  Amen
